Giving self-belief the benefit of some doubt

I share the stereotypically British dislike of bragging and affection for self-deprecation. I also think the self-critical impulse is essential to any creative act. At the same time, ostentatious modesty is not always convincing, and self-criticism can come in forms that are not at all helpful.
