Philosopher Julian Baggini and senses scientist Barry Smith come together to explore the deeper meaning behind one of the world’s most beloved drinks. From the history and culture of coffee to the moments of pause\, connection and contemplation it creates\, they ask whether this everyday habit might offer us a different way of thinking about time\, attention and the art of living well. \nThey join forcesfor a thoughtful and surprising conversation about how something as simple as a cup of coffee can reveal more about ourselves and the world we share. \nYour ticket includes a coffee and a pastry.

SUMMARY:Coffee\, Philosophy and the Good Life
DESCRIPTION:In 1906\, Kakuzō Okakura published an extraordinary short book\, The Book of Tea\, which beautifully expressed the core ideas of the Japanese blend of Zen and Daoist thought. A century later\, Julian Baggini has updated the book for the 21st century\, with coffee at its centre\, showing “Coffee’s capacity to awaken within us a proper sense of the world and our place in it.” As Okakura said\, it is an example of the importance of finding “beauty among the sordid facts of everyday life” in which we are reconciled to the transient\, impermanent nature of being.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Salon: Existentialism as Therapy?
DESCRIPTION:Emmy van Deurzen is one of the world’s most respected existential therapists and founder of the Existential Movement\, which aims to “make existential ideas available to the wider public in order to help people achieve greater clarity in their reflection on human existence and in solving their personal and emotional problems.” \nHer new book\, Beginning to Live\, advocates a way of being which enables us all to find a more engaged way of living that is purposeful\, deliberate and buoyant. But to what extent can philosophical ideas and arguments promote well-being or happiness? Isn’t philosophy for steely-eyed honesty\, not therapy? Joining Emmy and host Julian Baggini is Jonathan Webber\, Professor of Philosophy at Cardiff University and editor of The Penguin Book of Existentialist Philosophy. After a break for you to get a drink and gather your thoughts\, the second half will be led by your questions and contributions.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Salon: Free Speech under Fire
DESCRIPTION:In his new book Setting Fire to Reason\, philosopher Jeffrey Howard argues that free speech is among our most important moral rights\, but—like all rights—it has limits\, determined by moral duties we owe to each other. Howard will be unpicking the law\, morality and limits of free speech with and host Julian Baggini and political theorist Judith Squires. In the second half\, the conversation will be led by your questions. Come not only to hear about free speech\, but to participate in it.
